P.' s Resignation Announced Dr. Samuelson to Join IHC The University of Utah and Intermountain Health Care jointly announced today the appointment of Cecil O. Samuelson, M. D., as senior vice president for medical affairs at IHC. Dr. Samuelson is currently vice president for health sciences at the University of Utah. Dr. Samuelson was named vice president for health sciences in 1988 following a three- year stint as dean of the U School of Medicine. Prior to that he had served as acting dean on two occa-sions. During much of his medical career, Dr. Samuelson, a board- certified professor of inter-nal medicine, has divided his time among patient care, education and administration. A rheumatologist, Dr. Samuelson said he chose his specialty because as a medical student, he could see there were many people with muscle and joint problems and relatively few doctors to care for them. In making the joint announcement, presidents of both Salt Lake institutions praised Dr. Samuelson's administrative and professional acumen. " For the past 17 years, Cecil Samuelson has played a central role in the refinement and development of our School of Medicine and Health Sciences Center," said U President Chase N. Peterson. " He has given nearly one- third of his life in distinguished service to his alma mater, and, while the university family will miss him, in his new position he will continue to be a resource in education and health care for the people of Utah and the Intermountain West." IHC President Scott Parker said Dr. Samuel-son has " proven ability as an astute administra-tor. Coupled with his professional training as a physician and his keen understanding of today's challenging health- care environment, Cecil Samuelson is well- qualified to serve as IHC's senior vice president for medical affairs." A 1970 graduate of the U School of Medicine, Dr. Samuelson, 48, also completed a graduate degree in psychology here. After completing post- doctral work at Duke University, the Salt Lake native returned to the U where he joined the medical staff in 1973
