Those who've found it are reluctant to reveal that the new O Zone lot is the answer to their parking prayers. " Don't promote this too much because we don't want it to fill up," joked Sandee Flick, an MICU health unit coordinator. The O Zone lot opened in mid- September near Austin/ Van Cott Hall. People paying for an " A" permit can trade for an " O" permit and park for free in the new lot. Flick couldn't pass up that deal. Her 20- minute walks to the hospital are history and she now takes a shuttle from the O lot that delivers her to the hospital front doors. " Even if I had my original A spot, I doubt I'd go back to it," Flick said. Sue Woods, R. N., NBICU, is another O Zone convert who no longer pays for an A permit. " Now my parking money is going into my Roth IRA," Woods said. MICU's Brent Johnson, R. N., said when he traded his A permit Parking Services told him he could get it back if he wanted. Fat chance. Board Honors Five at Annual Retreat The University of Utah Hospitals & Clinics Board recognized five people last month for their outstanding service and dedication. The honorees were Laurie Lesher, R. N., NBICU; Barbara Viskochil, manager of the Governmental Programs Office; Bert Holloway, Customer Service; Blaine Castagno, U Neuropsychiatric Institute; and John T. Kesler, chair of the UH advisory board. The five were honored at the board's annual retreat held in Park City. Pharmacy Students Don White Coats New doctor of pharmacy students officially began their education at the College of Pharmacy by receiving their white coats in a ceremony on Oct. 24. John Mauger, Ph. D., professor and dean of the College of Pharmacy, welcomed students, their families, and friends to the White Coat Ceremony. Mary Anne Koda- Kimble, Pharm. D., professor and dean of the School of Pharmacy at the University of California San Francisco ( UCSF), gave the keynote address. Koda- Kimble spoke about the characteristics that make pharmacists the most " accessible and trusted health professionals." Pharmacy programs at UCSF and the U of U rank first and second, respectively, in research funding from the National Institutes of Health. This year's 45 students entering the doctoral program will complete their degrees in 2007. The ceremony culminated National Pharmacy Week. Twenty health- care organi-zations participated in the event, providing informa-tion about job opportunities for nurses. Eric Swanson Named to AMPA Board Eric Swanson, M. D., assistant professor of emergency medicine and AirMed medical director, has been elected to the board of directors for the Air Medical Physician Association ( AMPA). His two- year term on the board begins this month. Swanson will work with AMPA leaders and members to study and improve air transport for patients through medical direction, research, education, and collaboration. The group represents more than 400 physicians and programs nationally and internationally. Swanson received the AMPA Medical Director of the Year award in 2001. Wanted: HCI Hospital Nurses Nurses interested in working at the Huntsman Cancer Research Hospital are invited to an open house on Saturday, Nov. 15, 10 a. m.- 2 p. m. Mary Scott, R. N., HCI director of nursing, will be available to answer questions at the event on HCI's second floor. Visitors can tour the cancer hospital, which is expected to be completed in July. Poison Control Relocates in Research Park The Utah Poison Control Center ( UPCC) has moved into a new building at 585 Komas Drive, Suite 200, in Research Park. The move provides a number of benefits, including backup generator power and a 24- hour secured building, said UPCC Director Barbara Insley Crouch, Pharm. D., M. S. P. H. The new location also has been renovated to meet current seismic codes. The UPCC got a new phone system in the move and has a new administrative telephone number- 1- 801- 587- 0600- and a new number for educational materials- 1- 801- 587- 0603. The nationwide toll- free number for people to call the center with emergencies and ques-tions- 1- 800- 222- 1222- and fax number- 1- 801- 581- 4199- have not changed. AirMed's Own to Lead Nurses Group AirMed's Ann Lystrup, R. N., begins her term Wednesday as president of the Air & Surface Trans-port Nurses Association. Lystrup, who has been with AirMed for 5 1/ 2 years, has flown with teams in Southern Utah, Colorado, Montana, and Idaho during her 18 years of flight nursing. " I'm excited," said Lystrup, who served as presi-dent- elect for the organization last year. " It's great to get to know other transport nurses from around the world and be associated with such outstanding profes-sionals. I'm especially honored to represent the University of Utah Health Sciences Center and AirMed. We have a top- notch program, and our team members are unbeatable." Target Helps ROAR with $ 3,000 The Reach Out and Read ( ROAR) program at the U's South Main Clinic gives nearly 1,600 books annually to children after their checkups. Recently, Target Corpora-tion helped by donating $ 3,000 for books. " The South Main Clinic is doing incredible things to help strengthen our communities," said Laysha Ward, vice president of Target's community relations. " We feel it's not only our responsibility to give back to the community, but it's our privilege." South Main Clinic provides medical care to underserved women and children.
