The Athletic Department will stay with Coca Cola for the concessions at Rice Stadium and in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Bill Richards, concessions manager, says the details of promotions and sponsorships are still being discussed. As part of the U contract, Pepsi Cola West has agreed to sponsor several promotions around campus, as well as be a major sponsor of the annual University Hospital- Utah Open golf tournament. The University of Utah has contracted with Pepsi Cola West for exclusive sales of Pepsi soft drink products at campus food service outlets and in University Medical Center. Beginning July 1 or shortly thereafter, Pepsi products will be sold by University Food Services facilities in the Olpin Union, Wasatch Spec-trum cafeteria in UMC, campus soft drink vending machines, the Ute Trading Post in Ballif Hall, and the snack bars in the Annex and Univer-sity Services Building. The product line includes Pepsi Cola, Diet Pepsi, Cherry Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Slice and Orange Slice. The five- year contracts with University Food Services and Hospital Nutrition Care Services are the result of a competitive bidding I process, wherein soft- drink compa-nies were asked to submit proposals of what they were willing to provide in terms of product cost, service, variety of products and promotional sponsorships. " The bidding process provides the University with very favorable purchase costs for the products, which lets us keep our prices for food generally as low as possible," says Norman Chambers, director of the U's auxiliary services. " Neither Pepsi nor the Coca Cola Company would be willing to give us nearly such attractive proposals without an exclusive contract, which is one reason why we don't carry both product lines." The Medical Center already serves Pepsi products in its fountain outlets; it will now replace Coca Cola Mobile Scanner A mobile CT scanner has been installed in the front of University Hospital ( between the ER and the Patient/ Staff elevators) to reduce some of the overload on the Hospital's CT machine. The mobile scanner is for outpa-tients only and will accommodate approximately 15 patients a day. Many patients in University Hospital's Rehab Unit suffer from these impairments~ a result of strokes, head injuries and neurological diseases. Others simply lose their ability to articulate, speak and, sometimes, swallow. May is National Better Hearing and Speech Month, and University Hospital's Department of Speech Pathology is celebrating with quizzes in the cafeteria and a display on the first floor bridge, May 19- 21. According to the Utah Speech, Language and Hearing Association, more than 21 million Americans suffer hearing disorders. Speech or language disorders such as aphasia, articulation and voice problems, and language delays affect more than three million children and adults. " Five years ago, this department consisted of two speech pathologists," said Nancy Christensen Mayer, M. S., CCC- SP, manager of the " Today the Hospital has six full- time speech pathologists and five part- time employees. That's how important speech therapy is becoming in patient rehabilitation." In Hallside Gallery An exhibit celebrating the work of multi- media artist Edward Walker is currently on display in the Hallside Gallery ( AC 113). Walker combined a variety of media: silk screen, tie weaving, paint and wood. Using " found" and " everyday" objects as a starting point for his art, he infused his singular sense of joy and humor into the mundane things we see, use and depend on in our daily lives. His silkscreens and paintings are an extension of his comic and critical view of our culture. A graduate of the University of Utah, he majored in graphic design. Born in Ogden, Ut., Walker lived and worked in Salt Lake City for more than 20 years. He died on May 5, 1992, of AIDS- related complications.
