Volume5/1992_June11PULSE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER w June 11, 1992 HSC Cancer Center To Begin Breast Cancer Study The Utah Cancer Center located in the University Health Sciences Center was recently awarded a grant from the National Cancer Institute for a breast cancer prevention study. More than 16,000 women will participate. According to Barbara Behrens, R. N., the study is the first known large- scale breast cancer prevention effort in the country. Candidates are women 35 years and older, who have a history of breast cancer in their family, or who have had live births after 30, positive biopsies or other factors that place them at high risk for developing breast cancer. The study is a double- blind test, with half of the participants taking the drug Tamoxifen and the other half receiving placebos. Construction Scheduled For UMC Terraces Construction to resurface the top levels of the College of Nursing Parking Terrace and the West Parking Terrace will begin Monday, June 15. Some stalls on the second level may be blocked off for safety reasons. Employees are still encouraged to park in the terraces, but if they become full, parking spaces in the South Terrace are available. Em-ployee parking in the North Patient/ Visitor Terrace is prohibited. The construction is scheduled to last approximately three months. Summer's Here: Care For Your Skin To commemorate of National Melanoma/ Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, Larry Meyer, M. D., assistant professor of dermatol-ogy, joined by a medical student and several UMC employees, recently set up a booth at Sugarhouse Park, where they handed out free sunscreen and information on the warning signs of skin cancer. The booth will be displayed in the Wasatch Spectrum Cafeteria this summer. Poetry Readings In Hope Chapel David Lee, award- winning writer and poet, will read from his work Thursday, June 18, at 2 p. m. in the Hope Chapel. Lee, chair of the Department of Language and Literature at Southern Utah University, will read from his latest writings, as well as from previous publications: The Porcine Legacy, Driving and Drinking, Shadow Weaver, The Porcine Canticles, and Paragonah Canyon. The reading is free to patients and employees. Light refreshments will be served at 1: 30 p. m. UH Gift Shop Sale The Hospital Gift Shop is scheduling its annual Pre- inventory Sale, Friday, June 26. Come enjoy the fun, food and games with other hospital employees. WW ^ P r i n t e d on Recycled Paper Bagley Receives Gardner Prize For Outstanding Woman Student Sandra W. Bagley, Ph. D., a senior at the University of Utah College of Nursing, will receive the first annual Elizabeth Fuhriman Gardner prize for the Outstanding Woman Student in the Health Sciences. The prize, which includes a cash award, was established in memory of Libby Gardner and has been funded by her family and friends. Mrs. Gardner, a health sciences graduate in dental hygiene, was the wife of former U of U President David P. Gardner. She died in February 1991. Students in the medical school and the colleges of pharmacy, nursing, and health are eligible for the award. Bagley's selection was based on service to the community, to the University, and evidence of excep-tional personal and professional promise. UH Auxiliary Installs 1992- 93 Officers The University Hospital Auxiliary recently held its installation luncheon at Willow Creek Country Club. Past- president Herb Russell announced the new officers to the auxiliary, hospital administrators and hospital employees. The new leaders include: Elaine Athens, president; Barbara Newey, president- elect; Margaret Nelson, first vice president; Linda Gee, second vice president; Sylvia Ander-son, recording secretary; Dorothy Webster, corresponding secretary and Gwen Barnhart, treasurer. In addition, Janet Kolman and Laura Rogers will take over as co-chairs of the docent program, a program which gives free tours of the hospital to intermediate and high school students. D. in health education from the U. She will be honored with the Gardner Prize at the College of Nursing convocation June 12; she also will receive her bachelor of science in nursing this spring. After many achievements in other fields, Bagley decided to become a nurse and started her studies in 1990. Her work as a 24- hour caseworker with emotionally disturbed native boys in Alaska led her to return to the university and receive a M. S. W. degree from the U's Graduate School of Social Work in 1973. In 1974, she co- founded the Utah Women's Clinic and later established the Utah Adoption Service. In 1985, using her own funds, she established the Wasatch Women's Center for Reproductive Health. Bagley was honored by the Utah Women's Political Caucus in 1983 with the Susa Young Gates' Award for Outstanding Service to Women in Utah. In 1988, California Lutheran College, Thousand Oaks, California, where she earned her bachelor's degree, honored her with the Out-standing Alumnus Career Achieve-ment Award for her work with women. The U's College of Nursing presented her with a Certificate of Outstanding Contributions that same year. She has served as a subcommittee member of the Governor's Task Force on Teenage Pregnancy, Utah Women's Legislative Committee, Utah Adoption Council, Utah Women's Political Caucus and numerous other committees related to advocacy for women. Four-member teams ( two men, two women) will play in a scramble format for fun and prizes. The cost is $ 20 a team, which includes green fees, a golf ball and lunch. Engineer Ttirned Artist; The work of India native Hiro Chhatpar is on display in the Hallside Gallery ( AC 113). Chhatpar, who now works as an electrical engineer, uses pen and ink drawings to " vibrate and synchronize in perfect relationship like a well coordinated transmission- relay system." He first went to Colorado State University to work on his master's degree in electrical engineering, but " I realized," he said, " I could no longer suppress my inner urge to paint," and he changed his major to art. Yoga is another of Chhatpar's accomplishments, and he has worked as an instructor. Even more important to Chhatpar is his certification as a professional gourmet chef.
