Thanks to the hospital's Social Activities Commitee for organizing the spring event. Department Runs for Bishop, ' Cure' The Department of Family and Preventive Medicine participated in the " Race for the Cure" on May 12 in honor of F. Marian Bishop, Ph. D., MSPH, professor and chair emerita of family and preventative medicine. The race was one of many sponsored Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Founda-tion throughout the country to promote awareness, education and early detection of breast cancer. Seventy- five percent of the proceeds from the Salt Lake City race will stay in the community to support breast cancer programs and activities targeted at education and treatment throughout the state. D., R. N., dean of the Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing, will assume responsibilities as dean of the U's College of Nurs-ing August 6. Keefe's appointment was ap-proved May 14 by the University's Board of Trustees. Sue E. Huether, Ph. D., R. N., who has served as interim dean, will continue in her position as associate dean for clinical affairs. A certified pediatric nurse practitioner, Keefe is principal investigator on a $ 1.67 million study, " Manag-ing Infant Irritability: A Clinical Trial," funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research, National Insti-tutes of Health ( NIH). " Maureen Keefe is accepting the leadership of a nursing college with a strong history and a bright future," said A. Lorris Betz, M. D., Ph. D., senior vice president for health sciences and dean, School of Medicine. " The college is currently ranked 25 out of 82 nursing colleges in NIH research support, and its goal to be in the nation's top 20 schools will surely be enhanced by Dr. Keefe's own emphasis on research. We look forward to her arrival." continued on page 3 Construction Alters HCI Parking All entrances to the Huntsman Parking Terrace except the entrance from the north will be closed at 7 a. m. May 21. This closure is necessary to allow construction for utilities to serve the hospital and Huntsman expansions and is expected to last several weeks. Parking Services has changed the internal traffic routing to allow access to all levels of the terrace from the north entrance. Attention Golfers: Get Clubs, Teams Ready for Annual Hospital Golf Scramble It's time to get teams together for the UH Social Activities Committee annual Tee Time Golf Scramble on the U Golf Course, June 21. Teams must include two men and two women ( one team member must be a university employee). Registration is $ 32 per team or $ 8 per individual. Early Workout Proves Key for Warner SALT LAKE 2002 Steve Warner 999 A HEALTHIER YOU 2002' UTAH'S HEALTH LEGACY Steve Warner, Health Science Development, says he loves how he feels after running the first mile, although " sometimes it can be a killer." Running, lifting weights and doing aerobic exercise several times each week keep Warner, this week's fitness health profile, feeling good. Warner developed his self discipline for exercise after he was confined to a bed for three weeks with pneumonia in 1978. His brothers encouraged him to begin running and he has been avid about it ever since. Warner rises at 5: 20 a. m. to run for nearly an hour; then he often hits the weights to continue his workout. He ends his workout time with some reading. Warner believes his self discipline toward daily exercise sets the tone for the rest of his day as assistant vice president for Health Sciences Development/ Alumni Affairs. " I can do the hard things when I've disciplined myself to exercise." A fitness high point for Warner was running the Moab half marathon with his wife and five children. The motivation for the running Warners was the result of example, said Warner. " The children saw me and my wife run, and now they're runners themselves." Medical Students Party with Pizza from the Dean's Office Elizabeth M. Allen, M. D., associate dean, and David J. Bjorkman, M. D., M. S. P. H., S. M. A., senior associate dean, visit with students at a " Spring Fling" lunch May 11. The Dean's Office treated the medical students to all- you- can- eat pizza simply because, as Bjorkman said, " They deserved a party. " Abstracts of the storyboards are online at Keefe served as associate dean for practice at the University of Colorado ( UC) School of Nursing in Denver before joining the faculty of the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston in 1995. In Denver, she also was vice president for nursing research and education at The Children's Hospital, and associate director of the Kempe Re-search Center. A fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, Keefe has received many honors. These include the 1998 South Carolina League for Nursing Award for Excellence, the 1997 Gamma Omicron Research Recognition Award, the 1996 YWCA Woman of the Year Award for the city of Charleston and Who's Who in American Nursing in 1993. Radiology Department Shows National Symposium Visitors Filmless Systems The Department of Radiology recently provided tours to more than 300 national and international visitors who were in Salt Lake City for the 18^ annual meeting of the Society for Computer Applications in Radiology ( SCAR). Six busloads of conference- goers were shown a video overview of the department's workflow and digital, or filmless, operations. The radiology department is on the cutting edge nationally as it " goes filmless." The MICU, SICU, NCC, Radiation Oncology and Burn Trauma areas have already converted to filmless radiology, and it's expected that all the units will be converted by Septem-ber. Radiology staff, coordinated by Mary Freeh, Opera-tions Manager, demonstrated the Picture Archiving and Julia Crim, M. D., associate professor of radiology, speaks to Communication Systems ( PACS) operations in the tour group about the new technologies used in the department. diagnostic, computerized tomography ( CT), file room and bone reading room. U Hospitals & Clinics Receives National Award for Employee Services Program University Hospitals & Clinics has won a national award for its employee services program for 2000. The Em-ployee Services Management ( ESM) Association's Eastwood award was presented to Wendy J. Bailey, coordinator, hospital administration, at the ESM's recent annual conference in New Orleans. ESM, established in 1941, focuses on " The Ten Components of a well- rounded employee services program" in selecting award winners. These include recognition and recreation programs, special events, dependent care, wellness, voluntary benefits, employee stores, and community, convenience and travel services. U Hospital's award entry emphasizes the need to provide an infrastructure that supports the work of employees and the well- being of their families. According to Bailey, the Hospital's 2000 program met specific goals, such as including employees at remote locations in activities, increasing the number of special events without increasing costs and expanding services available to night shift employees. Communications Service Plans Tours, Open House Network and Communication Services ( NetCom) is holding an open house on May 23 from 8: 30 a. m. - 4: 30 p. m. in Research Park at 606 Black Hawk Way. The open house will provide an opportunity to tour the Network Operations Control Center where the campus' computer network is moni-tored, visit the Campus Help Desk, talk to NetCom's Customer Service staff about telephone services, watch a demonstration of IP Telephony and see other new technologies. Festivities will include refresh-ments, free T- shirts, and a raffle. Shuttle service will be provided all day from the University Hospital, Union Building, and Park Building.
