That's where InfoFair ' 90 comes in. Sponsored by the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library, this year's InfoFair will focus on the topic of hospital information systems and U of U computer applications and services. The day- long event will be held in the College of Nursing and the library, Thursday, March 29, beginning at 9 a. m. " InfoFair is a unique opportunity for local health- care professionals to get timely information on computer applications and resources. It also offers a glimpse of how computers will be used in the future in the health sciences," says Joan Marcotte, assistant director for technical services at Eccles Health Sciences Library and InfoFair coordinator. The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature speakers, special presentations and exhibits. u Computers Revolutionize the Way Future Physicians Learn Medicine Remember the time aunt Vera asked you for the slide of cousin Ernie, dressed up as a reindeer, that was taken at the family Christmas party several years ago? And remem-ber how you had to go through a dozen slide carousels to find it. Well that's the kind of task medical students faced until the University of Utah's " Slice of Life" program came along. Slice of Life takes thousands of medical slides ( that's equivalent to several hundred slide trays) and condenses them all onto one easily accessible videodisc, the size of a record. That translates into one of the slickest learning aids medical students have seen in years. It all began at the U and will be featured at InfoFair. In 1985, as a campus- wide aca-demic and research computing program was initiated on campus, medical students chose as their first project a computer- assisted instruc-tional program using videodiscs. Thousands of hours of program-ming and several versions later, the " Slice of Life" is now described by Wayne Peay, director of the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library as " one of the pacesetters in the country for computer- assisted instruction." Designed by students under the direction of faculty member Suzanne Stensaas, Ph. D., associate clinical professor of pathology, " Slice of Life" acts as a huge visual encyclope-dia to organize some 50,000 images on the videodisc. Those images are linked up to computer programs that help students study different organ systems, examine cross- sections of the body or learn how heart rhythms work. Some of the programs have built in quizzes to test students' knowledge of the slides they are viewing. The " Slice of Life" disc is also being used as an electronic textbook in certain courses. Students can read the class syllabus, which has been cross- referenced with the disc to call up certain slides at indicated places in the text. Mr. Peay says this gives students a whole new option in learning. In addition to attending lectures and reading texts, they can use the interactive programs. The health sciences library cur-rently has 10 stations set up to run the " Slice of Life" and its companion programs. Not only is the " Slice of Life" a benefit to U students; it has gained a national reputation iis well. The library markets the program and has sold more than 100 packages to various institutions including Harvard University, Apple ( omputer, Sony and the National I . ihrary of Medicine. Professor, Department of Medical Informatics Hospital information systems have traditionally developed as sources of data. They have been conceived to store, transmit and report administrative, financial and clinical data. Through inclusion of knowledge bases, hospital information systems now can aid nurses, physicians, administrators and technicians in the decision- making process. When the decision needs of the user are known, appropriate knowledge bases can be incorporated into the system applica-tions. In this presentation, various types of decision needs will be defined and illustrated as practical examples. The quality improvement potential resulting from incorporation of this decision support will be discussed. " Hospital Information Systems for the Department of Veterans Affairs" Gordon E. Moreshead Director, VA Information Systems Center An overview of hospital information systems in use in V. A. medical centers will be presented, including the history of conceptual framework behind the development of current systems, the current technological platforms, currently available software modules, clinical software prototype modules soon to be available and strategic plans and goals for future hospital information systems for the V. A. " Hospital Information Systems and Open Architec-ture" Steven M. Witz, Ph. D. University Hospital Associate Administrator Open architecture in hospital information systems is a subject receiving increasing scrutiny. Proponents of open architecture have presented this as an option with unique advantages for hospitals with multi- vendor information systems. University Hospital has undertaken an evaluation of open architecture for potential application in its information system. The results of this evaluation identify alternate models for achieving open architecture, each with varying strengths and weaknesses. The appropriateness of selecting an open architec-ture model appears to be dependent upon priorities for specific areas of hospital information systems functionality and the or-ganizational structure of information users specific to each hospital.
