May Friday 17 1895 Charming calm balmy morning bright & clear. Vegetation of cultivation in orchard garden & vineyard rejoicing. Busy sulphuring vines with the promise of a fine crop. Brisk wind P.M. from w [west]. Went to S.F. Met Prof Knowlton on train coming home. A most amusing egostist glorying in the strength of garrulous comfortable smartish ignorance. Saturday 18 Fine bright day, pleasant ride to SF. The bay lovely in color & the hills about it. Rather cool & windy in the evening. Had a talk with Mr. Upham a director of the new railroad on its prospects. Had a meeting of the Sierra Club. Very few present. Elected Mr. Libby Director instead of Hopkins resigned & elected the old board of officers though I requested to be released of the president after serving two terms. Sunday 19 Bright cool breezy. Mrs. Strentzel feeling better. Visit from the Douglasses. Monday 20 Remarkably cool, windy in the afternoon. Some of the fast growing vines breaking off. The regular trade wind coming from far over the Pacific Ocean. Went to the train with Mr. Douglas. Saw Mr. Swett & assisted him in getting Frank appointed Philloxera commissioner by interviewing supervisors. Signed petition to have grape boxes boiled on the wharf to kill any phylloxera that may chance to be on them. Planted grape cuttings this P.M. Shoots on them already 3 or 4 inches long. Did but little writing. It does not yet run well. Tuesday 21 Fine day. Cherries, white ones ripe. Never so late before that I can think of. Much reading. Little writing. Grandma ill.
