Stratigraphy, palaeoenvironment, and hydrocarbon potential of a non–marine sedimentary sequence

Diese Dissertation stellt eine multidisziplinäre Studie dar, die aus palynologischen, mikropaläontologischen und geochemischen Untersuchungen von Sedimenten aus dem Niedersächsischen Becken (NB) besteht. Solch ein integrierter Ansatz ist wichtig, da die untersuchten Sedimente zur Zeit der Jura-Kreide-Grenze (Tithonium bis Valanginium) in einem sehr dynamischen System an der Schnittstelle zwischen kontinentalem und ozeanischem Raum abgelagert worden sind. Quantitative optische und chemische Untersuchungen hatten dabei folgende Ziele: a) Erstellung eines verlässlichen und hochauflösenden stratigraphischen Systems für das NB; b) Korrelation mit sowohl nicht-marinen als auch marinen sedimentären Abfolgen Nordwesteuropas; c) Rekonstruktion der paläogeographischen und paläoökologischen Bedingungen, des Klimawechsels und dessen Auswirkungen auf die Vegetation; und d) Bestimmung von Typ, Menge und Maturität des organischen Materials sowie des Kohlenwasserstoffpotentials der Sedimente.This thesis presents integrated palynological, micropalaeontological, and geochemical studies on Jurassic–Cretaceous boundary deposits (upper Tithonian–lower Valanginian) from the Lower Saxony Basin (LSB). Such an approach combining different disciplines is particularly useful in a complex and dynamic sedimentary system like the LSB that occurs at the interface between continent and ocean. These epicontinental deposits represent excellent geological archives and provide ideal palaeoclimatic insights. Quantitative optical and chemical analyses are used: a) to provide a reliable high-resolution stratigraphic framework for the LSB; b) for correlation with other non-marine and marine sedimentary successions in NW Europe; c) to reconstruct the palaeogeographical and palaeoecological conditions and environmental dynamics and their impact on vegetation; and d) to determine the origin and alteration of the sedimentary organic matter and the hydrocarbon generation potential of the deposits
