Overhead view of Main and High Streets

This overhead view is a snapshot of downtown Columbus, Ohio, looking north on High Street. Several notable buildings are visible in the photograph, including the Southern Hotel and the Lazarus Department Store. Opened in 1897 as the Great Southern Fireproof Hotel and Opera House, the landmark hotel is now known as the Westin Columbus Hotel. Founded in 1851 by Simon Lazarus, the department store merged with Macy's in 2005. The large skyscraper in the distance is the Rhodes State Office Tower. Completed in 1974, the Rhodes Tower is the tallest building in Columbus. The High Street Photograph Collection is comprised of over 400 photographs of High Street in Columbus, Ohio, taken in the early 1970s. These photographs were taken primarily at street level and document people and the built environment from the Pontifical College Josephinum on North High Street in Worthington through Clintonville, the University District and Short North, Downtown and South Columbus. The photographs were used in a television photo documentary that aired on WOSU called "High Street."
