High Street, Columbus, engraving

This engraving portrays High Street, Columbus, Ohio, ca. 1830. The street is wide and unpaved. The buildings on the right are the Neil House and the American Hotel. On the left is shown the United States Court House, the State Offices, and the Statehouse (third building on the left). A busy street then as now, High Street is shown to have many pedestrians as well as horse-drawn carriages and riders on horseback. The right side of the street, which includes the hotels, includes many buildings with awnings. The caption at the bottom of the image reads: "High Street, Columbus. On the right is seen the Neil House and the American Hotel; on the right, the U.S. Court House, the State Offices and State House." Made of stone and brick, the Statehouse in this image was constructed in 1816. The State Office building was built of brick with sandstone trim. The exterior of the Statehouse deteriorated badly, and in 1839 the cornerstone of the current Statehouse was laid. However, construction of the new Statehouse was not finished until 22 years later. The original Statehouse in Columbus burned on February 1, 1852
