Pittoresco deriva dall’italiano pittore. Osservazioni dal Voyage pittoresque

The monumental, encyclopaedic production by the abbot of Saint-Non on the South of Italy is probably the first “real-life” photograph of this important part of the country.The vastness of the field of investigation, the accuracy of the surveys, the technical and figurative consistency in describing the visited places – features that reveal the presence of a broad cultural, publishing “project” – render the Voyage pittoresque ou Description des Royaumes de Naples et de Sicile a very original work that will leave lasting traces on Italian and European culture.Its main, distinctive feature is that picturesque “angle” that constitutes a sort of filter, a tuning key between the places and the Author’s “filming tools” (literary and graphic). From this point of view, the Voyage was, in its time, an extraordinary example of the development of that aesthetic and moral category that is precisely the Picturesque.This leads to another aspect, not to be overlooked, concerning the specific character of places, or of their identity. It is then somewhat interesting to understand if, and to what extent, that identity is directly established by the places depicted or if, instead, it is their “narration” – visual and literary –that gives them that powerful and sometimes indelible mythical aura that in many ways, even today, we ourselves, in particular circumstances, seem to recognize in them.La monumentale, enciclopedica ricognizione sul Mezzogiorno d’Italia dell’abate di Saint-Non molto probabilmente costituisce la prima fotografia “realistica” di questa significativa parte dell’Italia. L’ampiezza del campo d’indagine, l’aspetto sistematico delle rilevazioni, l’omogeneità tecnica e figurativa della parte relativa alla rappresentazione dei luoghi visitati – aspetti che denotano la presenza di un ampio “progetto” culturale e editoriale – fanno del Voyage pittoresque ou Description des Royaumes de Naples et de Sicile un’opera molto originale che lascerà tracce durature nella cultura italiana e europea.La principale di queste tracce, riguarda innanzitutto proprio quell’“angolazione” pittoresque che costituirà una sorta di filtro, di chiave di accordo, tra i luoghi e le strumentazioni di “ripresa” (letteraria e grafica). Da questo punto di vista il Voyage sarà per l’epoca un laboratorio straordinario di messa a punto di quella categoria estetica e morale che appunto è il Pittoresco.Un altro aspetto certamente non secondario che da questo deriva, riguarda il carattere specifico dei luoghi, ovvero della loro identità. Diventa allora di un certo interesse capire se e in che misura quell’identità sia emanazione diretta dei luoghi raffigurati o quanto, invece, sia la loro “narrazione” – visiva e letteraria – a conferire loro quella potente e talvolta indelebile aura mitica che per molti versi ancor oggi noi stessi, in particolari circostanze, sembriamo riconoscere in essi
