This paper examines the opposition and the protest of the black slave in Rio Grande do Sul between 1737 and 1848. The aim is to demonstrate that he was not so pacific as generally thought Escapes and violence against the lords and "quilombo" formation are features that demonstrate the unsatisfaction of the black slave. These facts are brought to light after studying criminal prosecution papers and reports concerning the reasons and the way of life of the negroes in the "quilombos".
