This article, the first of a series of three, comments the academic background and philosophical and historical production of Laerte Ramos de Carvalho, first director of the Department of Education of Universidade de São Paulo, highlighting some points: 1) aspercts of his formation while might have eventually influenced his philosophical studies and historical research; 2) the interrelationship between philosophy and history mediated by education; 3) the peculiarities of his contribution to the development and renovation of studies on education in Brazil; 4) the scientific rigor of his investigation.
