Since the 1880’s, a type of porcelain called Nippon has been highly regarded in America. Originating in the Seto region of Japan, it was exported from the early Meiji Era onward, and pieces manufactured by the Morimura Group in particular are admired for their superb quality. Porcelain from this period has since come to be known as “Old Noritake”. In Japan, however, “Old Noritake” has until recently, been regarded not as “art”, but rather as a product of industry. But perceptions are beginning to change. The success of the various exhibitions suggests that Old Noritake have come to be regarded as one of the most representative modern Japanese export porcelains.
