If “science made the modern world,” a claim espoused at the end of the nineteenth century and repeated until accepted as a truism by the twenty-fi rst century, what made science? A part of the answer to this question is communication (Shapin 2007). Included in a broad defi nition of communication is rhetoric, public relations, interpersonal and organizational communication, mass and mediated communication designed for multiple audiences, and technical communication designed for very few. All of the areas of communication study are relevant to science, too.
