Gypsum crusts with a single crystal layer are described in the solar salt work of Salin-de-Giraud (Southern France). They precipitate directly from brines saturated with respect to gypsum. While with less thickness, they are also observed in basins where halite begins to precipitate. The crystals display a zoning of alternating clear and inclusion rich layers, related to salinity changes, and therefore tell about the history of the brines. The crusts are preserved in the basins of higher salinity, but where gypsum is the only salt precipitating, an algal and bacterial layer at the bottom of the crust destroyes the crystals into a gypsum sand.Les dépôts gypseux des marais salants de Salin-de-Giraud (Camargue) constituent des croûtes à une ...
