Deze doctoraatsverhandeling onderzoekt de naoorlogse verstedelijking in België vanuit de invalshoek van economische activiteiten en gerelateerde infrastructuurprojecten. Het traceert de stedelijke modellen die het verstedelijkingsproces beïnvloedden. In de eerste naoorlogse periode werd de modernisering van het economische weefsel en de infrastructuur ingepast in bestaande structuren. Vanaf 1954 wordt een krachtige ruimtelijke ruggengraat in het nationale territorium gepland, die berustte op drie ruimtelijk-economische ontwikkelingsmodellen. Ten eerste worden de grootschalige industrieën als de automobiel-, staal- en petrochemische nijverheid, aangelegd in nieuw gebouwde infrastructuur corridors in de perifere streken van het land (de zeehavens, langsheen het Albert Kanaal en delen van het Waalse industriebekken). Ten tweede bevorderde de bouw van het snelwegennetwerk en investeringen in wegeninfrastructuur rondom Brussel en Antwerpen de vestiging van hoofdkwartieren van (multi)nationale ondernemingen, wat de rol van Brussel als hoofdstedelijke regio van het land versterkte en leidde tot de stedelijke figuur van de industriële strip. Deze twee ontwikkelingsmodi resulteerden in een nationaal verstedelijkingspatroon dat gelijkenis vertoonde met eerdere voorstellen voor een nationaal plan in België. In verschillende regionale plannen werden satellietsteden toegevoegd aan de industriële corridors, waardoor lineaire stedelijke structuren ontstonden, in navolging van Le Corbusier s Cité Linéaire Industrielle of Renaat Braem s Bandstad België. Tenslotte bekroonde het industriepark als derde ruimtelijk-economisch ontwikkelingsmodel de bouw van de economische ruggengraat voor de Belgische welvaartsstaat. Het is een flexibel model, dat uitsluitend steunt op wegverkeer en dat de twee andere modi aanvult omdat het ingezet kan worden in economische ontwikkelingsregio s.Introduction Part I.
