Paul-la-colère : éloge d'un schismatique

Angry Paul : In praise of a schismatic The apostle Paul is not simply the great theologian and the fearless missionary. He is also a rebel who one day, having had enough of the authoritarian habits of the Jerusalem Church and of James, its head, threw himself recklessly into schism in order to defend his right to use the only easy canal, that of the diaspora synagogues, to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles. And he is a loser who, some ten years later, confronted with failure, surrendered and vanished into obscurity. But meanwhile he had been so amazingly stimulated by the struggle that he had literally opened for Christianity the door to the future, a door that had hardly been ajar before him. How could we do other than praise him for his doubtful revolt ?L'apôtre Paul n'est pas simplement le grand théologien et l'intrépide missionnaire qu'on dit. C'est aussi un rebelle qui un beau jour, excédé des pratiques autoritaires de l'Eglise de Jérusalem et de Jacques, son chef, s'est lancé à corps perdu dans le schisme pour défendre son droit de passer par le seul canal commode, celui des synagogues de la diaspora, pour prêcher l'Evangile aux païens. Et c'est un vaincu qui, une dizaine d'années plus tard, constatant son échec, a fait sa soumission et sombré dans l'obscurité. Mais entre temps, étonnamment stimulé par la lutte, il avait tout simplement ouvert au christianisme la porte de l'avenir, à peine entrebâillée jusqu'alors.
