Kardiyak arrest geçiren ve kardiyopulmoner resüsitasyon uygulananların kognitif süreçler yaşayabileceği, bazı kişilerin ise arrest süresince yaşadıkları olayları bilincin varlığını gösterecek şekilde ve doğru olarak anlatabildikleri saptanmıştır. Kardiyak arresti yaşayanların büyük bir bölümünde genellikle iyi bir yaşam kalitesi bulunmamakla birlikte; arrestten hemen sonra başlayarak davranışsal, kognitif ve emosyonel bozukluklar ile posttravmatik stres bozukluğu olabileceği birçok çalışmada gösterilmiştir.
