Possibilities and challenges when teaching math to deaf students: an experience with area and perimeter teaching with a 6th grader

O objetivo geral desta pesquisa é indicar possibilidades de ensinar Matemática para alunos surdos em sala de aula do ensino regular, para tanto, realizamos uma pesquisa a partir de um trabalho sobre conteúdo de área e perímetro realizado com um aluno surdo de uma classe do 6º ano do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola pública estadual de uma cidade do interior da Paraíba. Os referenciais teóricos que fundamentaram o estudo envolveram a literatura sobre a educação dos surdos, sua inclusão em escolas regulares, o trabalho do intérprete, a visão sociocultural da aprendizagem matemática dos surdos e o direito de atendimento educacional especial. A pesquisa se caracteriza como qualitativa e os sujeitos envolvidos no trabalho foram: um aluno surdo do 6º ano do ensino fundamental, a mãe do aluno e a professora de matemática do aluno que é a primeira autora deste trabalho e sua turma. Os instrumentos de coletas de dados foram: diário de campo da professora-pesquisadora, atividades realizadas pelo aluno individualmente e atividade avaliativa realizada com todos os alunos da classe. Além de indicar possibilidades de ensinar matemática para alunos surdos, a pesquisa aponta a necessidade dos alunos, pais e professores de saberem a Língua Brasileira de Sinais (Libras) ou ter um intérprete em sala de aula quando o professor não sabe a Libras. Além disso, atenta para a importância da parceria da família e escola no processo de ensino e aprendizagem dos alunos surdos.This research study aim shows some possibilities of the teaching Mathematics to deaf students in the regular education. Therefore, we conducted a research about contents of area and perimeter performed with a deaf student of the 6th grade of a state school in interior of Paraíba. Theories utilized in the construction of this article involve the literature on the deaf education, its inclusion in regular schools, the work of the interpreter, the socio-cultural view of the mathematical learning of the deaf and the right to special educational services. The qualitative research involved: a deaf student of the 6th grade of elementary school, the mother of the deaf student and the student's mathematics teacher. The analyzed informations were collected from: teacher-researcher's field diary, activities performed by student and evaluation activity performed with all students in the class. This work presents different ways to teach mathematics for deaf students. Furthermore, it point out the need for students, parents and teachers to know the Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS). When the teacher doesn't know this language he needs to have an interpreter in the classroom to improve the learning. We have also noticed the importance of family and school partnership in the teaching and learning process of deaf students
