Marcial: ‘Hispanus’ ou ‘Hispaniensis’? Martial: Hispanus or Hispaniensis?

Martial, born in Bilbilis, wouldn’t be able to resist the centripetal force from Imperial Rome. The caput mundi earned him the glory of recognition, but also consumed the poet in its bustle. Bilbilis would emerge, after 34 years spent in the Vrbs, as a refuge for an old age devoted to writing. However, only one final book has Martial written in Hispania… Accessing the invitation outlined by the work of the epigrammatic, we intend to understand how is his poetry influenced by this confrontation, raging within him, between the Bilbilitan he was born and the Roman he became.Marcial, nascido em Bílbilis, não conseguiu resistir à força centrípeta da Roma Imperial. O caput mundigranjeou-lhe a glória do reconhecimento, mas também o consumiu no seu bulício. Bílbilis emerge, volvidos 34 anos na Urbe, como refúgio para uma velhice dedicada à escrita. Contudo, apenas um livro final escreveu Marcial, na Hispânia… Acedendo ao convite esboçado na obra do epigramático, pretendemos compreender como se concretiza e influi na sua produção poética este confronto, que dentro dele se trava, entre o bilbilitano que nasceu e o romano no qual se transformou.
