English summary: The Grant of the Roman Citizenship: Pompey the Great and Spain. The grant of the Roman citizenship was used by the generals during the civil wars of the last time of the Roman Republic to win followers and to reward loyalties. The example of Pompey the Great in Spain, well-known through the literary sources, is illustrative in this respect. But this doesn't mean that those individuals of imperial time that had as nomen Pompeius, that we know mainly through epigraphy, had ancestors who received the citizenship from Pompey or had belonged to his clientship.
