GERMINACIÓN DE SEMILLAS DE VARIEDADES CRIOLLAS DE MAÍZ (Zea mays L.) BAJO DÉFICIT HÍDRICO

The objective of this research was to evaluate and select Creole maize (Zea mays L.) varieties for tolerance to germination and other morphological characteristics of the seedlings under water deficit. Forty-two (42) varieties collected in areas with recurring drought in Chiapas, México, were evaluated. The study was carried out in the Plant Physiology lab of INIFAP’s Central Chiapas Experimental Field. The water deficit was induced with polyethylene glycol PM 8000 (SIGMA) at a concentration of 12.5 g in 100 ml of water, originating a water deficit of -5 baryes. A completely random experimental design with four repetitions was used. The variance analysis detected significant statistical differences between Creole varieties for percentage of germination, length of the coleoptile, length of the mesocotyl, and total dry weight of the seedling, under water deficit, indicating great genetic variability between them. The following Creole varieties were selected: Olotillo, Azul, Amarillo, Tuxpeño, Jarocho and Rocamex, because of their higher tolerance to germination and morphological characteristics under water deficit, which should be used in the programs for genetic improvement for drought tolerance in the subhumid warm region of Chiapas and other regions with similar climate.El objetivo de la presente investigación fue evaluar y seleccionar variedades criollas de maíz (Zea mays L.) por tolerancia a la germinación y otras características morfológicas de las plántulas bajo déficit hídrico. Se evaluaron 42 variedades recolectadas en áreas con sequía recurrente en Chiapas, México. El estudio se realizó en el laboratorio de Fisiología Vegetal del Campo Experimental Centro de Chiapas del INIFAP. El déficit hídrico se indujo con Polietilen Glicol PM 8000 (SIGMA) a una concentración de 12.5 g en 100 ml de agua, originando déficit hídrico de -5 barias. Se utilizó un diseño experimental completamente al azar con cuatro repeticiones. El análisis de varianza detectó diferencias estadísticas significativas entre variedades criollas para porcentaje de germinación, longitud de coleoptilo, longitud del mesocótilo y pesos seco total de plántula, bajo déficit hídrico, lo cual indica gran variabilidad genética entre ellas. Se seleccionaron las siguientes variedades criollas: Olotillo, Azul, Amarillo, Tuxpeño, Jarocho y Rocamex, por mayor tolerancia a su germinación y características morfológicas bajo déficit hídrico, mismas que deben usarse en los programas de mejoramiento genético para tolerancia a sequía en la región cálida subhúmeda de Chiapas y de otras regiones con clima similar
