EFECTO DEL ESTRÉS HÍDRICO Y NITRÓGENO EN LAS RAÍCES DE VARIEDADES HIBRIDAS Y CRIOLLAS DE MAÍZ (Zea mays L.)

With the objective of evaluating the response from a group of hybrid and Creole varieties of maize (Zea mays L.), in terms of accumulation of dry material from roots, under conditions of irrigation, drought and nitrogen deficiency in greenhouse, two old hybrids (H-28 and H-30), two modern (H-48 and H-50), and two Creole (white and blue grain) maize varieties were evaluated. A completely random block design with two repetitions in a 4X2 factorial arrangement was used, and the experimental unit was of one tube (PVC, 1 mx4”), filled with sandy loam soil (CC=33.9% and PMP=21.1%). The maize variants were subject to irrigation during their biological cycle; S1, 10 days without irrigation (30-40 dds); S2, 20 days without irrigation (50-70 dds), and S3, 30 days without irrigation (70-100 dds) with high nitrogen (AN, 160-40-20) and low nitrogen (BN, 80-4020) applied in the sowing. The decrease of soil hydric content was reflected in a higher (p?0.05) accumulation of dry matter in the roots of plants subject to drought. The plants under drought produced a higher dry weight of roots than those under irrigation. These differences between soil moisture were higher than those observed between levels of nitrogen. The average accumulation of dry matter from roots was higher (p?0.05) in improved varieties than in Creole ones under conditions of drought and nitrogen deficiency.Con el objetivo de evaluar la respuesta de un grupo de variedades hibridas y criollas de maíz (Zea mays L.), en términos de acumulación de materia seca de raíces, en condiciones de riego, sequía y deficiencia de nitrógeno en invernadero, se evaluaron dos híbridos antiguos (H-28 y H-30), dos modernos (H-48 y H-50), y dos criollos (grano blanco y azul). Se utilizó un diseño de bloques completos al azar con dos repeticiones en un arreglo factorial 4x2, y la unidad experimental fue de un tubo (PVC, 1 mx4”), lleno con suelo migajón-limoso (CC=33.9% y PMP=21.1%). Las variantes de maíz se sometieron a riego durante su ciclo biológico; S1 sin riego 10 días (30-40 dds); S2 sin riego 20 días (50-70 dds), y S3 sin riego 30 días (70-100 dds) con alto nitrógeno (AN, 160-40-20) y bajo nitrógeno (BN, 80-40-20) aplicado en la siembra. La disminución del contenido hídrico edáfico se reflejó en mayor (p?0.05) acumulación de materia seca en raíces en las plantas sometidas a sequía. Las plantas bajo sequia produjeron mayor peso seco de raíces que las de riego. Estas diferencias entre tratamientos de humedad edáfica fueron mayores que las observadas entre niveles de nitrógeno. En promedio la acumulación de materia seca de raíces fue mayor (p?0.05) en las variedades mejoradas que en las criollas en condiciones de sequía y deficiencia de nitrógeno
