A study of diachronic changes in the productivity of several Early New High German derivational morphemes using the RIDGES corpus

In dieser Masterarbeit analysiere ich verschiedene für die Untersuchung von morphologischer Produktivität und ihrem diachronen Wandel gebräuchliche Maße. Diese Maße -- normalisierte und nichtnormalisierte Typenfrequenz, Hapax Legomena, Wachstumskurven, Potential Productivity und der Parameter S vom "finite Zipf-Mandelbrot"-LNRE-Modell -- werden anhand von Daten aus dem RIDGES-Herbology-Korpus für drei Derivationsprozesse des Frühneuhochdeutschen analysiert: -er, -heit/-keit und -ung. Diese Arbeit zeigt, dass obwohl diese Maße eine verbreitete Nutzung in der Literatur haben, sie in Wirklichkeit nicht für die Analyse diachroner Produktivität geeignet sind. Das liegt daran, dass sie voraussetzen, dass die Korpora in allen Zeitintervallen gleich groß und idealerweise möglichst groß sind, wovon man aber bei historischen Korpora generell nicht ausgehen kann.In this master's thesis, I analyse several standard measures used in the literature for quantifying changes in morphological productivity over time. These measures -- raw and normalised type counts, hapax legomena, vocabulary growth curves, potential productivity, and the parameter S from the finite Zipf-Mandelbrot LNRE model -- are tested using data from the RIDGES Herbology corpus for three derivational morphemes in Early New High German: -er, -heit/-keit, and -ung. I find that these measures, despite their widespread use in the literature, are not suitable for the analysis of diachronic changes in productivity. This is because they are all fatally dependent on consistent, and ideally large, sample sizes, neither of which are usually at hand in historical diachronic corpora
