Crossing the long bridge at dusk we camped out on the north shore. It was mid-October and the first cold snap of the season was with us. A large flock of geese flew honking down the river obviously looking for a secluded stretch of water for night quarters. Next morning a can of water left at a distance from the fire was frozen nearly solid, but just at sunrise the geese flew up-stream again and we took it for a sign that winter had delayed its coming.
