One of out six Mainers are employed in the nonprofit sector, which in themselves are small organizations taking in less than $100,000 per year. The Quarterly Census for Employment and Wages in 2015 found that nonprofits contribute $11 billion to the Maine economy via wages paid, retail and wholesale purchases and professional services contracts.
