More than 27,000 Maine employers on Friday will be subject to a new law that gives them one week to report every newly hired worker. The law is another weapon in the state\u27s arsenal targeting parents who fail to pay child support, and while being denounced by some employers as unecessary bureaucratic intrusion is seen by others as offering potential savings to the taxpayer, who must now absorb the cost of deadbeat parents by funding welfare payments. Businesses with high employee turnover rates or seasonal increases in hiring are subject to the law and face civil fines of up to $200 a month for noncompliance. Details
