How Maine Works piece on the state\u27s maple-sugar industry. Maine produced 167,000 gallons of maple syrup in 1996, with a value of $3.1 million, placing the state third in the nation in maple syrup production. Ninety-two percent of the syrup was sold in bulk, most of it to buyers from Canada and Vermont, with just three percent sold wholesale and five percent retail. Support is growing to organize a promotion board to develop new and better markets and to create market recognition for Maine maple syrup. With profiles of Perry Gates of Camden, owner of Bald Mountain Maple, and Bob Smith of Skowhegan, owner of Smith\u27s Maple Products and president of the Maine Maple Producers Association
