News & Issues piece on Maine Yankee, which last week canceled its $250 million contract with Boston-based Stone & Webster to decommission its nuclear power plant. Stone & Webster is in bankruptcy court, and May 9 was the last workday for its employees at the Wiscasset plant. Work will likely continue in some fashion, because most of the workers subcontract to Stone & Webster or work for Maine Yankee. Maine Yankee will probably seek new bids, including from Stone & Webster, or act as its own general contractor. Nuclear industry critics said the fixed-price contract was unrealistically low.
