News & Issues piece on environmentalists who are questioning the relevancy of the statistics to actual forest health in a 1999 Maine Forest Service (MFS) report, which documents a steady decline in clear-cutting. Some believe MFS director Tom Doaks is misleading the public. Jonathan Carter of the Forest Ecology Network (FEN) charged that as many as 50 percent of cuts classified as selection go right to the margin of the definition of clear-cutting. Carter said the report underscores the need for Maine citizens to vote yes on the November referendum that would require all clearcuts over five acres to be reviewed and permitted based on science
