Environmental activists are questioning conclusions made by Maine Department of Conservation Commissioner Ron Lovaglio about the impact of the Maine Forest Practices Act. A new report to the Maine Legislature says that clear-cutting has declined from pre-FPA levels of 145,000 acres annually to around 51,000 acres annually, leading Lovaglio to conclude that the FPA has effectively reduced the size of clearcuts.
