Maine adoption records are routinely sealed, but a new spirit of openness in recent years is making it easier for adoptees and birth parents to seek information, contact and reunion. The Maine Department of Human Services has maintained the Maine State Adoption Reunion Registry since 1978, and 1,440 individuals have registered. The Mina Bicknell Adoption Resource Center organizes educational conferences and maintains it own reunion registry. The Maine Children\u27s Home instituted a new policy that resulted in open adoption records if both parties were willing.
