While the Atlantic salmon have gotten most of the attention, many other fish harmed by dams are not only critical to complete the ecological picture but also, as scientists are discovering, as prey buffers to further protect young salmon. For 11 years, the Department of Marine Resources (DMR) has been stocking alewives and shad in the Kennebec watershed, but the Penobscot has gotten very little attention. DMR\u27s Tom Squiers said part of the difference is hydrology: the Kennebec has a longer undammed fresh water reach below the last dam and several undammed tributaries sustained shad and salmon runs.
