Keel Kemper, a veteran wildlife biologist with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, says statistically, the animal most often confused with the mountain lion is the white-tail deer. He has studied photographs and tracks and found they showed the presence of bobcats, coyotes, or other animals. Real cougars are the fourth-largest cat species in the world. Kemper says he\u27s not bent on disproving people\u27s strong convictions, but believes there is no evidence of a breeding population in the state
