While the genetic code is vital for all living organisms, the expression of their genes is also dependent on epigenetics, which is genetic information not encoded in the DNA sequence resulting from external factors (Weinhold, 2006). This has become an exciting field of research, especially because of the gene-environment link. Changes in gene expression that influence behavioral responses, such as addiction, have prompted a closer look at epigenetics and behavior. This paper will discuss recent advances in understanding how DNA methylation and histone methylation dysregulate reward learning mechanisms and cause neuroanatomical changes that contribute to addictive behavior
