Astrophysics in Film: The Physics of Interstellar

Christopher Nolan\u27s 2014 film Interstellar is most notably remembered for its so-called accurate representations of astrophysical phenomena, such as worm holes and black holes. In this paper, I analyze four different scenarios in the film: the worm hole, Miller\u27s planet, Gargantua, and the tesseract, and draw conclusions about their validity. Backed by quantum mechanics, general relativity, and planetary science, Interstellar\u27s depiction of the worm hole, Miller\u27s planet, and Gargantua are more or less accurate with a few minor discrepancies. The tesseract is the most highly speculative portion of the film, but is nevertheless partially explained by higher-dimensional geometry. The science behind Interstellar is well thought out and presented in a logical way relative to the film\u27s plot, and contains greater astrophysical representation than other contemporary science fiction films
