<Originals Papers>Effect of Si on the Solubility of Graphite in Molten Fe-Si-C Alloys

The solubility of graphite in molten Fe-Si-C alloys was determined up to 22% Si at about 1.540℃ and a second solid phase at higher Si concentration, about 23% Si was detected. The composition of this solid phase -SiC- was determined by chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction and the condition for the formation of SiC phase was discussed from the oxygen potential prevailing in the iron solution. Furthermore, considering the effet of the third element, Xi, on the solubility of graphite in Fe-C-Xi melts, authors recognized that the latter has an intimate relation with atomic number of Xi
