But first, a history lesson. ignacy Jan Paderewski was a famous Polish pianist and composer who lived at the beginning of the last century. He also served as Prime Minister of Poland, retiring -0 tour as a piano virtuoso. He travelled in style, by private rail car, along with his own Steinway piano. Now on to the story. A mother took her young son, an aspiring pianist, to a Paderewski concert, in the hope of encouraging his piano progress. After they were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the audience and went over to speak to her. Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy wandered off eventually going through a door marked NO ADMITTANCE. When the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat to find her son missing. Suddenly, the curtains parted and the spotlights focused on the grand piano. In aorror, the mother saw her little boy seated at the keyboard innocently picking out Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. -t that moment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in the boy's ear, "Don't quit. Keep playing." Then leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in the bass part. Soon his right hand reached around to the other side of the child and he added a running obbligato. Together the old master and the young novice transformed what could have been a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience. The audience was so mesmerized that they couldn't recall what else was played that evening. Only the Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star duet. Perhaps that is the way it is with God. What we can accomplish on our own is hardly noteworthy. We try our best, but the results aren't always graceful flowing music. However, with the hand of the Master, our life's work can truly be beautiful. Next time you set out to accomplish great feats, listen carefully. You may hear the voice of the Master whispering in your ear, "Don't quit. Keep playing." May you feel His arms around you and know that His Hands are there helping you turn your feeble attempts into a great masterpiece. Remember, God doesn't seem to call the equipped; rather He equips the "called". Life is more accurately measured by the lives you touch than by the things you acquire. See you in church! Or it can just be one of those things that make you smile... 1 guess I’m like many Canadians - sort of a blend On my Mom’s side we are pretty much British and Scottish (Tarbuck and McKinnon), meaning we know how to drink to excess and buy alcohol in bulk. We also swoon to the sound ot bagpipes, and can be known as frugal (cheap) On my Dad’s side the heritage was always laid out as Ukrainian (Klem and Forst), meaning for me that Grandma and Grandpa Klem spoke a language that I couldn’t under­stand, and ate food (including some parts of chickens, for example) that I had not even known to exist. Over the course ot the last year I experienced 2 heat attacks and underwent open heart surgery to repair the damage caused by a combination of genetics and lifestyle. With a bunch of rela­tives living into their 80’s and a maternal Grandfather who lived to be 92, you can blame my lifestyle. But, with my Dad coming from a family of 1 1 children - 6 boys - of whom 5 sons and 2 daughters had heart trouble and 6 (including my father) died early, there is also a bit of “shallow water in my gene pool”, so to speak. Anyway, as a natural course of open heart surgery, they stop your heart so they can "fix” it. Lack of a heart beat and breathing render you “dead” by a bunch of medical and social definitions, so according to my records, I got to be dead for 1 hour and 59 minutes. Now add the current fashionable movie and book trends for zombies and vampires, and suddenly (as a couple of nurses on the cardiac ward pointed out to me) being recently dead, and now Un- Dead, is sort of a cool experience. One of my cousins just emailed my Mom with some new research on my Dad’s side of the family, and guess what? My Dad’s side of the family come from a town named Chernivtsi (or Cernovcy) in the southwestern Ukraine, sit­uated on the upper Prut River in the Carpathian foothills. Chernivtsi is first mentioned in 1407, as a major population centre in an area known as Bukovina, between Galacia (of the Austrian/ Hungarian Empire) and what is now Romania. NOW, do some research into Bukovina and you find that area to be on the border between the former areas of Moldova (feeling the “creep” coming on9) and yes, Transylvania. No won­der Grandpa Klem was always eating all that garlic. So if you are driving through Queenstown around midnight under a full moon, and see a chubby bald guy with a cape who seems to be gliding along and not really touching the ground, relax. It is hard to believe that summer is nearly over. This is the last month that we will be benefiting from the STEP students Taylor Nelson and Danae Northcott. I want to thank them for all their work on the upkeep of the Village, often times despite the heat. Stewart Whaley is once again helping to ensure that the Village is properly mowed and maintained in addition to his duties at the Water Treatment Plant. For this to be possible, Louis Myers reduced his hours as he is wanting some time to work on projects of his own. I want to thank Gerald Deitz for his assistance in helping me understand the operation of the Water Treatment Plant. Gerald and Stewart constantly ensure that our water is safe, secure, regularly tested and recorded. I especially wish to thank the Administrative Assistant and Postal Clerk, Denise Myers, for her vigilance in the Office. She ensures that I am informed of what goes on, even on days when I am not there, that Village business is attended to routinely. Louis Myers remains a tremendous asset to this Village as well. A village the size of Milo still has all the paper work of a larger municipality which at times can be rather overwhelming, especially when it comes to development permits and grant reporting. For anyone who has ever stepped foot in the Village shop, you will have noticed that Louis is meticulous in his organization. To this end, along with the length of his tenure working for the Village, he has been significant help to me. Changes will be coming to Village Administration as we shuffle roles and responsibilities. I aim to establish clear roles and responsibilities, making the administration as lean as possible without compromising the capacity to manage our day-to-day business and plan for the development of our area. Implementation of the new billing regime for water usage is coming. We have been monitoring usage for some time and are aware that some residents would have taken a huge hit on their water bill if we had implemented the new regime in summer. It is my view that introducing the new regime should be at a time when usage is not at a premium, allowing residents to see how much it is going to cost them and react accordingly. Demolition of the burnt out property on Centre Street is imminent. We want this completed the first part of September, once a crew is available with the heavy machinery necessary for the job.
