John Wood was born on October 15, 1887 in Hawick, Scotland. Not much is known about his early life or other family members. As a young man, John immigrated to Canada, where he settled in Victoria, British Columbia with his aunt and uncle. At time of enlistment, he was single and employed as a motorman. On April 12, 1916, John Wood enlisted with the 15th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery. Bombardier Wood arrived in England on September 22, 1916, and remained in England until embarking for France on August 20, 1917. Upon arrival in France, he was taken on strength by the 61st Battery CFA out of Lethbridge, Alberta.
