Rogers, Andrew

Andrew Rogers was born on July 1, 1886 in Colchester, Ontario. He spent his childhood in Ontario. As a young man he headed west, living for a time in Lethbridge, Alberta and also in Fort Macleod with his wife, Helen. At time of enlistment, Andrew was employed as a labourer. On February 5, 1915, Andrew Rogers enlisted with the 13th Canadian Mounted Rifles. Pte Rogers arrived in England on July 6, 1916, and remained in England until embarking for France on January 19, 1917. Upon arrival in France, he was taken on strength by the Royal Canadian Dragoons, with whom he would serve for six months before being taken on strength by the 78th Battalion CEF. Pte Rogers would serve a further seven months with this unit on the frontlines in France and Belgium. On February 1, 1918, Pte Rogers was serving near Bethune when a gas shell exploded near him. Later that day, he would pass away as a result of gas exposure. He was laid to rest at Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension. Andrew Rogers was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. His wife, Helen received the Memorial Cross and death plaque in honour of her husband
