Wright, John Stenhouse

John Wright was born on October 29, 1888 in Banks, Ontario to parents Thomas and Joan Wright. He had two sisters Jean and Agnes, and two brothers James and George. He was a graduate of the Collingwood Collegiate Institute and Business College. In 1912, John traveled west, eventually making his home in Lethbridge, Alberta. At time of enlistment, he was employed as a clerk, and was also very active in the local Y.M.C.A. On October 11, 1915, John Wright enlisted with the 39th Battery 10th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery. Gunner Wright arrived in England on March 13, 1916 and remained in England until embarking for France on July 13, 1916. He served on the frontlines with the 39th Battery for just over two years, seeing action at the Somme, Arras, Vimy Ridge, Hill 70, Passchendaele and Amiens. On August 29, 1918, Gunner Wright was killed in action while serving in France. He was laid to rest at Windmill British Cemetery. John Wright was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. His mother, Joan received the Memorial Cross and death plaque in honour of her son
