John Wright was born on October 29, 1888 in Banks, Ontario to parents Thomas and Joan Wright. He had two sisters Jean and Agnes, and two brothers James and George. He was a graduate of the Collingwood Collegiate Institute and Business College. In 1912, John traveled west, eventually making his home in Lethbridge, Alberta. At time of enlistment, he was employed as a clerk, and was also very active in the local Y.M.C.A. On October 11, 1915, John Wright enlisted with the 39th Battery 10th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery. Gunner Wright arrived in England on March 13, 1916 and remained in England until embarking for France on July 13, 1916.
