Lippingwell, Alfred Henry

Alfred Lippingwell was born on January 19, 1879 in Kent, England to parents Henry and Julia Lippingwell. He grew up in England with his siblings Annie, Charles, Edith, Elizabeth, Ellen, Elsie, Olive, May and William. As a young man, he immigrated to Canada, making his home in Lethbridge, Alberta with his wife Bertha. The Lippingwell’s had three girls, Ivy, Dulcie, and Freda. During his time in Lethbridge, Alfred was employed by the CPR on the High Level Bridge construction project. At time of enlistment, he was employed as a laborer. On September 27, 1915, Alfred Lippingwell enlisted with the 82nd Battalion CEF. He arrived in England on May 29, 1916 aboard the Empress of Britain. Pte Lippingwell was taken on strength by the 50th Battalion CEF and shortly after proceeded to France. He served with the 50th on the frontlines for approximately 4 months, seeing action at the Somme and Rouen. On November 12, 1916, Pte Lippingwell received gunshot wounds to the hand, arm and thighs. The wounds were quite severe, and he was listed as dangerously ill. Three days later, on November 15, Pte Lippingwell succumbed to his wounds. He was laid to rest at St. Sever Cemetery Extension. Alfred Lippingwell was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. His wife, Bertha received the Memorial Cross and death plaque in honour of her husband
