Tuckwell, Stewart William

Stewart Tuckwell was born on April 1, 1877 in Aylesbury, England to parents David and Mary Tuckwell. He grew up in a large family which included Clara, David, Ernest, George, Harriet, Hephzibah, Sarah and Harry. While in England, he met and married his wife Rhoda. The couple immigrated to Canada, settling in Lethbridge, Alberta in 1909. The Tuckwell’s had three children, Sidney, Lloyd, and Doris. Stewart was employed with the Lethbridge Herald and a member of the Lethbridge Typographical Union No. 551. He also took a keen interest in local politics. On September 29, 1915, Stewart Tuckwell enlisted with the 82nd Battalion CEF. Pte Tuckwell arrived in England on May 29, 1916, and remained in England until embarking for France on October 13, 1916. Upon arrival in France, Pte Tuckwell was taken on strength by the 10th Battalion CEF. He served with the Fighting Tenth for 6 months, seeing action at the Somme, Arras and Vimy Ridge. On April 28, 1917, Pte Tuckwell was killed in action. As his remains were never recovered or identified, he is remembered on the Vimy Ridge Memorial. Stewart Tuckwell was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. His wife, Rhoda received the Memorial Cross and death plaque in honour of her husband
