In some cases they will be unusual memories; in others they will simply represent what goes on in this fine school day after day. They show, as closely as it is possible, the real world of Hamilton. That is important because in a few years from now you will look through the book again and you will have forgotten some of the things which seem so unforgettable now. When you look back again in several years I hope some of the hopes you held will have become realities. I hope you will have set some goals that have been reached. If you (when you look back) dis­cover that you have done more than you thought you really would, and if you have done that better than you thought you could then you deserve our commendation. This is the tradition of this magnifi­cent school, each of us working together to do more, better than it has been done before. We follow excellent examples of people who have been infected by a zest for living productive lives, the students and teachers who have been successful here. I hope you have left a similar example for next year’s students. E. D. The end of the 1979-80 school year. As I reminisce on the past year, I see the major accomplishments we, as students, have done. We have moulded ourselves into young adults so that, one day. we can become leaders of the world. At the beginning of the school year, I men­tioned that our motto would be "To Get Involved and To Be Involved." I noticed that many of you took it to heart and that's what made the year go past so rapidly. I hope that someday, when I return to take a look at the school. I'll be as proud of it then as I am now. Bonnie Hinatsu — President As your Vice-President, I saw many improve­ments occuring in Hamilton. It was very pleasing to see all of our student council activities going over so well. Though it took you. the student body, a while to get into the spirit, we came out all the better in the end. To the grade nine’s, you were the leaders and helped us make our activities successful. This was a cheering thought for the last year's grade 7 students, at the prospect of going back to school for the grade 8 year. Some of the advantages of being in grade 8 have shown themselves already. An important one is that a grade 8 student is normally much more comfortable when going back to school. The grade 8 is already familiar with the surroundings, the teachers, and what is expected of him or her. This makes it easier for them to fit into class schedules promptly. Also, Grade 8 is the year for students to prepare themselves for the role of the leaders of the school, and the heavy scholastic responsibilities of Grade 9. The homework is heavier, and you really start to have control over your grades, accord­ing to your attitudes and work habits. And oh. the satisfaction of knowing what you’re doing when; it comes to things like pep-rallies, dances, and dress-up days without the “first-time’’ nervousness, so often experienced in grade 7. Then, having your own locker is a true joy. No more squabbles or crowding for room, and a lot less headaches about borrowed or lost books. All in all, grade 8 will probably be a good year for everyone, with new responsibil­ities and new advantages over last year. Don’t despair grade seven’s, your turn is coming next! The whole aspect of war is affected by political barriers that separate the world into battlefields. With war. our country suffers from destruction in family situa­tions. mental hardships, and total economic setback. Even though most of us do not have to witness bloodshed personally, we turn to each other for unity and understanding. No matter what the outcome of war, there is no winning side: we are all defeated in the end. Only too often do people forget that we do not win for the sake of winning. Who would want to put his life on the line for the sake of a vicious game? Soldiers who have fought for Canada went for the sole pur­pose of seeking eventual freedom, for themselves and for the rest of Canada. A trust in providence is what sent these soldiers to battle from day one, right through to the end. Many soldiers lost faith and fell along the way. Guidance was doubted, at times, but renewed when men were put to rest. Some soldiers still carry permanent scars and have bodies that are maimed. These are the war vet­erans who lived to tell generations about the sacrifices of their comrades. Remembrance Day signifies Canadian dignity through long, bloody wars. The poppy, in which we trust as the divine symbol of tragedy during the wars and renewal of life for Canada, is worn to show that we care. The full grief is felt by the world and those who remain to bear the pain that is laden so heavily on their shoulders for these are the people, loved ones, rela­tives, and children whose freedom was saved by the great determination of our glorious Canadian soldiers. by: Chris PetersPOETRY — FIRST Reflections Of Remembrance A helmet on a cross — like a leaf in the wind — a totem of death; a pillar of grief. Here a brave man died, now put to peace, to rest forever more; a penance for the lives of many. Across the waves, and blue horizons, many a brave man died, to bring us eternal peace. Yet eternal peace was so abruptly shattered, by war once more: a larger, deadlier game. Here we stand, our heads bowed down, in respectful, prayeriul silence in the memory of those who died for us. But is this silence; this sorrow, in truth but a farce? For even now, the world stands ready, Death’s hot breath on our backs. A farce; a spectre of its true self, it matters not. For those who have heard; seen death, still stand in respectful silence. Most importantly though, we are to remember the sacrifices in wars gone by: for past, for present, for future. And pray it happens not again. Brian Heinrich HONORABLE MENTION The Poppy: Why I Wear One All alone this flower stands All alone but free Just as the soldiers who fought for us Had wanted life to be. Lonely is this flower That sways with the breeze, And marks the spot of these men Who fought across the seas. The flower is as red as blood, Much like the soldiers shed Before the battle all around Put them to their bed. The center of this mournful flower Is as black as night; Resembling the death of men Who were proud enough to fight. The long green stem that holds, This flower high above. Was the sign of life For the men we so dearly loved. The poppy is this respected flower That is used to mark the war, In which these men put out their best To the country they were for. Nov/, three years later, more "mature and stable” we can look back on our Junior High years. Grade seven was nothing short of terrifying. Not only were we confronted with new teachers and older students, but we had to meet and make friends with kids who'd come from four different elementary schools. Occasionally we joined in on the fun of dress up days and the like, but more often we were too cautious, and became bystanders. In grade eight we got more in the "swing of things." We cheered on our City Basketball Champs, and we turned oul for the two football games that our team won. We were more comfortable with our friends, and teachers, and learned to take things easier. Finally, in Grade nine, at the top of the heap, we had our goal in sight — graduation! We had a new administrative staff, consisting of Mr. Dawson, Mr. Lahti, and Mr. Young. This was a big change from Mr. Smith and his staff, but it all went well, which was proved by our progress. We started the year off in sports with our football team (they did try hard). As the football season came and went we once again settled into school life. In basketball, the Hornets stung every other team at least once, and the girls’ teams polished our Halos. Badmin­ton and track and field raced by as we started cramming for our finals. Our dances were a
