The Chesapeake Bay, named Chesepiooc, the “great shellfish bay,” by the Algonquin speaking native Americans of the region, was once one of the most productive oyster (Crassostrea virginica) producing estuaries in the world. With the advent of canning and the development of the railroad system, huge national and international markets were established for Chesapeake Bay oysters (United States Secretary of the Interior 1866,Wennerston 1981). From 1894 to 1912 annual oyster harvests in Virginia alone ranged from 5 to 7.5 million bushels (Hargis and Haven 1988).
