Justice Maring Says Goodbye to the Court

Justice Mary Muehlen Maring spent her last day at work at the North Dakota Supreme Court Friday, Dec. 20. She formally retires as justice on Dec. 31 after more than 17 years on the state high court bench. Justice Maring was honored by her colleagues and Court employees at the annual Court Recognition Ceremony Dec. 20. The Court employees presented Justice Maring with a commemorative vase. Justice Maring then turned the tables on her fellow judges, giving them all specially selected t-shirts. Thank you all so much for many, many good memories and good years, Justice Maring said as the gathering closed. I wish the court system the best. My final words are \u27thank you.\u27 Justice Maring will continue to serve the court as a surrogate judge. Her replacement, Judge Lisa Fair McEvers, will take office on Jan. 1, 2014, and begin work at the Court on Jan. 2. A public retirement ceremony to honor Justice Maring will take place Jan. 9 beginning at 3:30 p.m. in the lobby of the North Dakota State Heritage Center on the capitol grounds in Bismarck. Justice Maring was appointed to the Court on March 1, 1996, to fill the vacancy created by Justice Beryl Levine\u27s retirement. Prior to arriving at the Court, she spent 20 years in private legal practice in North Dakota and Minnesota state and federal courts. Justice Maring was born and raised in Devils Lake, North Dakota. She received her B.A. degree in Political Science and German from Moorhead State University in 1972 and her Juris Doctorate degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1975
