And they, too, may be afraid of being branded protectors of pornography." - Fred Weingarten, senior policy fellow, American Library Association, and executive director, Computing Research Association, in the Chronicle of Higher Education Items of interest on campus people, programs, and events Two Western Carolina Univer­sity chancellors will be on stage at an upcoming retreat for overseas school board members, sponsored by the Inter-Regional Center for Curriculum and Materials Development. Both Chancellor John W. Bardo and Dr. Myron L. Coulter, chancellor emeritus, will speak at the meeting, to take place at the Waynesville Country Club Inn April 29-May 3. The event will focus on challenges for overseas schools in the coming century. Bardo will deliver the keynote address, and Coulter will conduct two sessions for participants. Conference partici­pants will also visit Western Carolina Univer­sity as part of their activities. • A complete set of Chancellors' Executive Memoranda is newly on permanent reserve in Hunter Library. Dating to 1974—twenty-two years into Western Carolina University history—the collection is the only complete set of the memo­randa outside the chancellor's office. It's a display of handmade books, assembled by Matthew Liddle of the Department of Art as an advertisement for a new book arts course that he will teach. Some books on display are by Liddle himself. For information, call Nan Watkins at 227-7274. • Advisors of nontradi-tional students, take note: The Jackson County chapter of the American Association of University Women is accepting applications for a $250 scholarship for 1996-97 for a nontraditional student at WCU. Applicants should be rising juniors or seniors who are at least twenty-five years old and have at least a B average. Applicants must demon­strate financial need. The award typically is given in installments of $125 for each of two semesters. For an application form, visit the Student Financial Aid Office. Events • No need to read between these lines: poet Michael Chitwood and literary nonfiction writer Linda Haac will be on campus to read from their works Wednesday, April 10. Their visits are part of the Blumenthal Writers and. Readers Series and are cosponsored by the North Carolina Writers Network West. The program is set for 7:30 p.m. in Founders Auditorium of the Moun­tain Heritage Center. Dr. Newt Smith, of the De­partment of English, will moderate. There is no admission charge. Call 227-7264 for information. • Spaces are still available for kids aged three to five years in the 1996 Tiny Tot Swim Program, with sessions set for May 27- June 7 and July 22- August 2. Each child must be accompanied by one adult in the pool. The cost is $25 per child. Tickets are available for April 12 and 13 performances, which are produced by Powder Keg Productions of Whittier. The rodeo will feature top athletes com­peting in seven Interna­tional Professional Rodeo Association-sanctioned events. Each evening's performance will also include clowns and a kid's "calf scramble." Advance tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children ages three through twelve. Tickets at the gate will be $12 and $8. Tickets for WCU students are $9. Tickets are on sale at the Ramsey Center ticket office and at the usual Ramsey Center ticket outlets. Faculty members invited to May retreat for UNC professors The Institute for College and University Teaching will sponsor its annual "Multi-Campus Retreat" May 13-16 at the Wildacres Retreat Center in Little Switzerland. Faculty members are encouraged to take part in the event. The theme this year is "Creating Ethical Environ­ments for Our Future: Individual, Institutional, and International Issues." The retreat program offers guest speakers on educa­tional issues of wide interest; sessions highlighting faculty hobbies, avocational interests, or special experi­ences; and exercise, socialization, entertainment, and outdoor activities. Let's get physical The Fitness Center is finally open. Here's the word on fees and hours The university community is "Celebrating Fitness" now that the long-awaited Fitness Center, part of the Wellness Center section of the renovated Reid Gymnasium, has opened for business. The Fitness Center, which houses more than $100,000 in new exercise equipment, held an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony April 9. Fitness director Debby Singleton and her staff provided tours of the facility and demonstrations of some of the equipment. The center will be open for use during the remain­der of spring semester 12- 9 p.m., Monday through Friday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturdays; and 1-5 p.m., Sundays. Summer hours will be 7 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday through Thurs­day; 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Fridays; 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturdays; and 1-5 p.m., Sundays. Hours of opera­tion will extend in the fall. Law-enforcement administrators from Haywood County to Chero­kee County expect that large numbers of interna­tional visitors will be in southwestern North Carolina during the sum­mer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Officials are looking for people who speak foreign languages and are willing to interpret between visitors and law-enforcement personnel.
