Reichley, executive vice president, Brown University, in Currents magazine Officials plan gala event to honor WCU's retiring 'first family' Chancellor Myron L. Coulter and Mrs. Coulter will be honored at a special retirement dinner Friday, April 29, hosted by the university's board of trustees, administration, faculty, staff, and students The gala event, which is open to everyone, will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Brown Cafeteria and will include tributes and pre­sentations by representa­tives of the University of North Carolina and the State of North Carolina, as well as WCU faculty, Cullowhee, North Carolina staff, students and alumni. Stephen W. Woody of Asheville, chairman of the board of trustees, will preside. Advance reservations are required and should be made by Friday, April 15. Tickets are $10 each and are available at the ticket office in the Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center. Student tickets are available at the A.K. Hinds University Center offices. Coulter has been chancellor at WCU for ten years and is scheduled to retire from that position on June 30. He will continue as a university professor. The Coulters plan to make their home in Haywood County. Though tickets were not on sale until March 19, the Collinses arrived at 5 a.m. the day before and "camped" overnight at the center to ensure seats. They had camped at other sites before, they said—to see shows by country stars Clint Black, Vince Gill, Pam Tillis, Wynona Judd, Alan Jackson, Lori Morgan, Randy Travis, and Ricky Van Shelton. "We'd like to see more concerts like this in Cullowhee, on a regular basis," said Gene, who recommends either Brooks and Dunn or Sawyer Brown for the Ramsey Center's next gig. Reynolds gets large grant for field work The American Chemical Society's Petroleum Research Fund has awarded Dr. James H. Reynolds, assistant professor of geosciences, a research grant of $25,000 to fund two seasons of field work in the Argen­tine jungles east of the Andes mountains. Reynolds's project, titled "Magnetic Polarity Stratigraphy of Neogene Continental Strata in the Sierras Subandinas, Northwest Basin, Salta Province, Argentina," is to determine the timing of petroleum generation, migration, and trapping in the region. The infor­mation could be critical to discovery of new hydro­carbon reservoirs in the Andes. Two WCU geology undergraduates will accompany Reynolds on each excursion to Argen­tina, undertaking senior theses related to the geological aspects of his project. Reynolds has worked along the east side of the Argentine Andes for a decade. The new field work will take place near the Bolivian border, where he will work with a consortium of Argentine petroleum concerns. Souroe: 1093 Fact Book, Office of Institutional Studies and Planning April Computer Center courses The University Computer Center will offer two introductory courses this month in Room 334 Forsyth Building for the faculty and staff and—for the first time—for people not employed on campus. "Introduction to MS-DOS," a four-day series, will meet 3:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, April 12-15. The workshop is for beginners and will require no previous computer knowledge. A second series, titled "Introduction to WordPer­fect 5.1," will be offered 2- 4 p.m. Monday-Friday, April 18-22. This series is for users with little or no experience with the WordPerfect word-pro­cessing program or who need to be refreshed on program basics. The cost is $10 for WCU employ­ees, $15 for others. The paper discusses confusing uses of the word that. Former professor Ainsley dies at 85 Dr. Raymond M. Ainsley, 85, professor emeritus of education, died March 21 in Madeira Beach, Florida. Ainsley's career in education spanned forty-four years. He was a highly respected member of the WCU faculty from 1955 until his retirement as a full professor of education in 1973. He was the first head of the university's department of administration and school personnel. Memorial gifts may be made, in care of the WCU Development Foundation, to the Ainsley Lectureship in Educational Adminis­tration. Cullowhee delegation presents at conference on community and crime Several professors and students from the Depart­ment of Criminal Justice made presentations last month at the annual meeting of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in Chicago, Illinois. Representatives of federal and state criminal justice agencies, as well as many universities, attended the meeting, whose theme was "Commu­nity, Crime, and Justice." Speakers from Western Carolina were Dr. Bruce Gay, assistant professor of criminal justice, whose presentation was titled "Rural Law En­forcement: Is Policing the Same Everywhere?"; Dr. Frederick Hawley, assistant professor of criminal justice, "Concealed Weapons Permits in Louisiana: the Sheriffs Speak"; Dr. Taiping Andy Ho, assistant professor of criminal justice, "Men­tally Retarded Defendant: IQ, Adaptive Behavior, and Retardation"; and William D. Hyatt, associ­ate professor of criminal justice, "Emerging Organized Crime in Iron Curtain Countries." Students who made presentations are Stephen Cheyney, Cathy Crowley, Brian Drake, Scott Lyman, Matthew McMurtry, Rachel Michalove, Lianna Saleeby, and Tracy Trexler. McDaniel, interim president, Converse College, in College Teaching Time capsule Western phoenix: On April 24, 1989, a ceremony at the main entrance of Hunter Library marked the official reopening of the building, which had operated at reduced capacity since February, when fire destroyed the University Media Center and caused smoke damage in other parts of the building. For two WCU women, social advocacy is more than an idea. Tackling social issues may be a temporary task for some stu­dents, just so much grist for the class-discus­sion or essay mill. But not for certain WCU students, who find ways to make social concerns personal. Take Elizabeth Teague. A graduate assistant in the freshman English program, the Asheville resident is helping to organize the Land o' Sky Regional Council's annual literacy conference, set for April 30 at UNCA. Over one hundred area business leaders, educa­tors, and administrators of literacy programs are expected. Teague and other organizers plan a keynote address on the National Adult Literacy Survey and workshops on topics from adminis­tration to a new teaching method, the "language experience approach." "I'm very interested in new experiential ap­proaches to learning," said Teague, an Athens, Geor­gia, native, who worked during 1989-91 with preliterate women in the African nation of Senegal. Now, aside from volunteer­ing with nonprofit organi­zations, she is helping to find novel ways to address common errors and other Cullowhee, North Carolina concerns in freshman English at WCU. 'Sandbox' earns resale award The Sandbox, WCU's com­puter resale area in the University Media Center, recently received the "Most Improved Campus Reseller Award" for Apple Computer's mid-Atlantic region. David Ginn, Sandbox representative, accepted the award at the company's resellers conference in Richmond, Virginia, in February. Western Carolina was chosen from twenty schools for the award because of increased computer sales and a commitment to supporting personal computing at the university. News fife Short takes on items of int erest Secretaries in the College of Education and Psychology were honored at a March 18 luncheon in Killian Building's Taft B. Botner Room. "Secretaries Apprecia­tion Day" was sponsored by the faculty and administration of the college in appreciation for the secretaries' work in offices and departments throughout the college. Native American writer Luci Tapahonso will close the Vising Writers series, reading from her poetry and stories Thursday, April 21, in the Hospitality Room of the Ramsey Center. University Women offer scholarship The Jackson County chapter of the American Association of University Women is accepting applications for a $250 scholarship for 1994-5 for a nontraditional WCU student. Applicants should be rising juniors or seniors who are at least twenty-five years old, have at least a B average, and demonstrate financial need. The award typically is given in installments of $125 per semester. The application deadline is Friday, April 22. Applications are available in the Office of Student Financial Aid.
