Between 1914 and the late 1960s, the Champion Fibre Company published an internal newsletter, called The Log, to share news about the Canton mill, the community, and its employees. '\Vhen a lad, Mr. Justice used to fi h in the riYer and rocuu through the hill surrounding the little v-illage of Pia-eon R iver , as it '\vas called then. ~1r. Justice remember. ·when there ·were only two hou e at Pi. eon R iver, a two-room log dwelling and a little frame building u ed a , dwelling and store. The frame building was located near the river, and the t\ ·a-room log hou e about where the present Hotel Canton is on Main Street. The log house was occupied by two sisters, 1i ses Moore, . who owned most of the . land in and surrounding the village - including the property where The Champion Paper and Fibre plant is now loca ted . In the early days, previou to 1892, according to Mr. J u tice, all traffic between Ash eville and counties in the western part of the state had to cross the river at this pla.ce; sin e th ere was no br idge it was n ece sary for bides, horses and cattle to ford the river. A "YEARN To LEARN" movement involving nwre than one-third of the Houston Division personnel has given a new twist to the three "R1s" and bids. fair to turn out a 1nill-full o£ better papermakers. Nearly four hundred Houstonites enrolled in the Charnpion-sponsored vocational training classes on papenuaking and related subjects which started in November. · Seventeen separate courses ·were organized and instructors re­cruited fron1 Mill personnel. They use all the tricks in a teacher's bag o~ tricks: movies, charts, den1onstrat.ions, Mill tours; guest experts, and expeiimentatjon, to give the students the most for thei.r "m.oney." Actually, tuition costs are paid by the company. Books and otheT fnate'rials go fn~e to students who successfully complete the courses or payments are refunded when they are turned in.. Students invest only their time- t.ime well spent judging from the comments of W. R. Crute, Division :'Manager, who said: "A desire and effort tO learn is fun-damental to improvem€nt, and improvement is the keystone to success, whetheT it is in paper n."taking or any other bus.i.ness. They are operating a · huge business. · · It's revenues are $1.3 billions a year. It employes 500,000 people. It operates 42,000 branches and main­tains 24,000 buildings. It has a fleet of 10,000 vehicle ·, of which the average age is 15Yz years. It transports and delivers 37 billion pieces of mail each year and conducts 800 million other tTansactions .in money orders, etc. And it runs a sav ings "bank" with four million depositors with total accounts of $3.4 hillions. That certainly looks like good business. But h ere is the other side of the picture: The Post Office . ells you, and delivers for one cent, a postal card which · costs it tv.ro and one half cent to print and deliver. This lo s in a year amount to 45 1nillions. It carries 1.6 billion pieces of mail free . It pay· huge subsidies to large users of mail and to airplane, steamship a9d other carriers. It has no ontrol over it. own accounting and cannot tell you what its financial cond ition is within e ight months of date.
